Burdica Biomedical Limited - an overview

Burdica Biomed Limited (BBL) is engaged in development of advanced biopolymer technologies, and manufacturing and marketing of products based on these technologies.

BBL has unique expertise in the therapeutic application of one specific biopolymer, hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance which contributes to the moisturisation, lubrication and elasticity of various types of body tissues.

Advanced medical biopolymers have been the subject of increasing research interest in recent years for a variety of reasons. In the case of HA, for example:

• It is produced naturally by the body and is therefore unlikely to cause adverse reactions.
• It is absorbed by the body, making it useful for non-permanent implants.
• It has properties that contribute to wound healing, making it an excellent candidate for post-operative and other tissue repair applications.
• It has significant anti-ageing properties, giving it various potential cosmetic applications.

Burdica's first HA based product, Zestica Fertility™, launched in April 2009, is a personal lubricant formulation specially designed for couples trying to conceive. It supports fertility by applying the properties of HA in enhancing the motility and fertilising capability of sperm. The product range has now been extended to include Zestica Moisture™, formulated primarily for older women to alleviate the dryness and discomfort often experienced during and after the menopause.

BBL is committed to continuing development of proprietary technology designed to improve and refine the therapeutic performance of HA. The company's current R&D programme is focused on a technology platform involving crosslinking of HA molecules to create biomatrices which will enhance efficacy and controllability in a variety of therapeutic applications. This is expected to provide the basis for an exciting new generation of products.
